Stagger Lee
Abe Mulkey (1926-2002) was a talented country musician known for his skills as a guitarist, pianist, fiddle player, singer, and songwriter. He was a longtime collaborator and band member of country music singer Lefty Frizzell1. Mulkey also played with other notable artists like Buck Owens and Merle Haggard. He spent many years in Nashville and recorded with various artists, including Bob Wills.
Mulkey wrote hundreds of songs that were recorded by artists such as Hank Williams Jr., Freddie Hart, and Merle Haggard. Despite his significant contributions to country music, he didn't achieve widespread fame as a solo artist.
Abe Mulkey released his version "Stagger Lee" in 1971. His rendition was released as a 45 RPM single by MGM Records. The track "Stagger Lee" is approximately 2:45 minutes long, and it was paired with another song titled "What Are You Doing Here" on the flip side. It emphasizes the dramatic narrative, presenting the characters and events in a way that aligns with country themes of morality, justice, and personal struggle.
