Tennessee Ernie Ford, born Ernest Jennings Ford on February 13, 1919, in Bristol, Tennessee, was a renowned American singer and television host. He gained fame for his rich baritone voice and versatility across genres, including country, pop, and gospel. One of his most notable hits was "Sixteen Tons," released in 1955, which became a defining song of his career.

In 1951, Ford released his rendition of "Stack-O-Lee" as a single with "Kentucky Waltz" as the B-side. The recording showcases his distinctive vocal style and was part of his early 1950s work that contributed to his rising popularity.

In his rendition, Ford adds a unique twist by depicting Stack-O-Lee's encounter with the devil, where Stack-O-Lee's notorious reputation even intimidates Satan himself. This embellishment aligns with the tradition of exaggerating the character's villainy to almost mythical proportions.

His version contributes to the rich tapestry of narratives surrounding the legendary figure of Stagger Lee, blending elements of country and folk music traditions.
