The Isley Brothers

The Isley Brothers, one of the most influential groups in R&B and soul music, recorded their version of "Stagger Lee" for their Twisting and Shouting album released in September 1963. Their rendition of "Stagger Lee" stays close to the R&B tradition of the late 1950s while infusing their distinctive vocal harmonies and energetic delivery. Unlike the raw blues of earlier versions by artists like Lloyd Price, the Isleys' take showcases their signature style—melodic yet powerful, with dynamic group vocals.

Infamously, on a live appearance on Ready Steady Go!, a British rock/pop music television programme, the singer pulled a gun and waved it around during the performance.

While their version of "Stagger Lee" didn't achieve the same level of fame as Lloyd Price's or other interpretations, it serves as an early example of the group's ability to reinterpret traditional material with their unique sound. Over the decades, the Isley Brothers became known for a vast array of hits across genres, from soul to funk to rock.
